RIVERGLEN RESIDENCE
RIVERGLEN RESIDENCE
Riverglen residence is located in the esteemed Steyn City estate on the outskirts of Johannesburg. Conceived as a monolithic stone edifice with voids cut from the stone that reveal nuanced and hidden interior spaces. The architecture is attuned to its surroundings, allowing and restricting views based on experience and privacy.
The home is based on the courtyard typology due to the nature of the contextual setting, with access from the north and staggering views to the east and south. This arrangement allowed a typology to develop where private and public zones are separated via the always accessible courtyard.
The three-story dwelling offers comfortable entertainment amenities in its large basement with hidden parking space, while the ground floor offers multiple platformed and open-plan arrangements for outdoor-indoor living.
The first floor offers a recluse from the open plan living environment, distilling the quality of life down to the slow and peaceful nature of reclining to the bedrooms. The kid’s bedrooms and main bedroom are separated via the courtyard.
The carving of the stone edifice is a beautiful solution to the contextual situation. It provides our clients duality in the function of their home by offering plenty of privacy while adapting to an open fluent environment when required.
