LUSAKA RESIDENCE

House in Libby Point, Zambia.

This amazing house of 1720sq.m. is situated in the middle of the bush on a 2,5ha. site.

On approaching the house, a slanted circular rusted steel enclosure with some off-shutter concrete walls are the first visible indication of the house.  The steel wall is slatted in parts, solid in other parts.  The approach is over a large water feature through a cut-out in the steel enclosure, where the view stretches through the hall to the central atrium and beyond.

A circular staircase rises from the centre of the hall over a water feature, with off-shutter concrete walls continuing from outside, with a formal lounge to one side and a chapel leading of the hall.  Once inside it becomes even more obvious that this is not an ordinary house:   None of the walls are straight or parallel and the curved glass inner wall is slanted inwards under an overhanging roof creating sun control.

The basement consists of red and white wine cellars and a home theatre, while a lightwell on the south side lets in light but not sun.

On the other side of the hall a dining room is connected to the kitchen through a butler’s pantry, while a breakfast room and double volume family room is divided from the kitchen by sliding glass walls.  An atrium lets north light into the kitchen, allowing a view into the kid’s playroom on the other side of the atrium.

The family room and playroom open onto the lanai and pool.   On the opposite side of the pool is a gazebo and entertainment area, including a firepit, guest suite, a bar, billiards room, dining and lounge areas and a spa.

Past the chapel on the other side of the house at a lower ground floor level is a gymnasium, a very large main suite, study, family history museum and a lanai.  An important feature of the house is the indoor/ outdoor aspect, where very room opens out through full wall sliding doors.

On the upper ground floor above the lower ground level are three kids’ suites all leading onto private balconies.   On the opposite side of the hall is the first floor which includes a kid’s suite, a private lounge and a second main suite.   All the rooms lead onto private balconies.
